UNICAVUCI
Coro
Popolare Siciliano
directed
by Matilde Politi and Simona Di Gregorio

Unicavuci
is a non professional choir, aimed to restore the vocal polyphonic
repertoire of ancient Sicily, its technics, contents, and also the
social value that is hidden below: traditional music as "collective
technology" creating aggregation and sharing opportunities for
the community.
The
experience of the Popular Choir Unicavuci started in Catania
in
autumn
2017 inside
the project
“Voci della Tradizione”, on
the development and recovery of Traditional Sicilian vocal repertory,
leaded
by
MOMU Mondo di Since
2018
it
changes its name to
UNICAVUCI, open
a section also in
Palermo, with
the aim to create a regional Sicilian choir.

SEA
SONGS FROM THE SICILIAN TRADITION
As
major island of the Mediterranean sea, Sicily has developed its
identity, through the centuries, in a very strict connection with the
sea and all life practices linked to the sea; the repertory of sea
songs is rooted in all the other Mediterranean traditions of people
who passed by, either for trading or political reasons.
Sicilian
repertory of polyphonic sea songs presents a huge variety of styles,
from the antifonale songs of the tuna fishing “mattanza” to the
songs of the crew during sailing works, or fishing, or the songs sang
by the women of the sailors.
To
substain the project, we produced a mini-album with some songs
recorded by the choir: some of them are rare, inedit and never more
heard since 50 years of popular oblivion.
